Having grown up in a Christian family and in a Christian school, I always thought of myself as a Christian and believed that was enough to get me to heaven. I didn't like going to church, reading the Bible, or anything else related to Christianity. In fact, I was allergic to it. I thought that obeying God's word wasn't important because God forgives so why obey? I didn't realize that obedience was the evidence of being a true believer.
According to our pastor, a true Christian is somebody who honors God and is a Christ-committed follower. Simply saying "I am a Christian and I believe in God" does not make a true Christian. It must be evidenced in our lives. Even Satan believes in God, but it doesn't make him a Christian.
Christianity is not a religion. Religion makes things legalistic and complicated. Nobody can really obey all the rules and commandments. Therefore, nobody can really be saved if we rely solely on obeying laws. Nobody is perfect. We cannot rely on our own strength. We need a savior and that is Jesus Christ. He is the bridge to get us to heaven, for our sins to be forgiven and be part of God's family.
Christianity is a personal relationship with God, our father. It is a parent-child relationship. It is a relationship where love is involved and is the most important thing.
In the eyes of God there are only two kinds of people:
- Those who love God
- Those who are indifferent to God
Going to church, reading the Bible, and obeying His word are not duties we must do, but evidence of our love for God, our father, our creator. It is something that comes naturally. Just like a lover excited to see his loved one, we must also be excited to hear God's word, to learn more about Him. This is what makes a true child of God.
